Frozen Fall

Photographing snow and ice can be one of the most difficult tasks in Black & White.  The trick is trying to get the extreme white values to show detail while still looking white.  Typically, one gets either blocked-up whites with no detail, or lots of detail, but with gray snow.  Careful exposure and development control is the key to handling this situation.

This image was made along the trail to Mount Whitney.  It was extremely cold when this image was taken and it was causing the shutter to stick occasionally.  Snow was starting to fall as the image was made, but due to the long exposure time, it doesn't show up, but does give an interesting look to the trees in the background.
